Cabernet and Merlot in Bordeaux

Cabernet and Merlot produce some fantastic wines all over the world but they were initially famous in Bordeaux – home to the First Growths on the ‘Left Bank’ and highly sought after ‘Right Bank’ wines. Not only are the reds famous but the whites, in particular the sweet botrytised wines of Sauternes, are well-known globally and sought after.

I discovered the wines of Bordeaux when I lived there over ten years ago. There’s so much to learn from the vineyards, the soil, the grapes, the producers, I feel I am long overdue a visit. Once you understand the concept of the different classifcations and which areas grow predominantly Cabernet or Merlot plus learn a bit of French (it always helps when talking to winemakers), it’s not such a complicated wine region!
