Denmark in WA

If you travel at the speed limit down Albany Highway from Perth, you can reach Denmark in about 4 hours. I found this a treasure chest, full of stunning scenery, dramatic coastlines, beautiful beaches and my favourite of all; exceptional wineries. I went to Denmark for a weekend at the beginning of March but it wasn’t long enough to explore all it had to offer. Still I can recommend two wineries to visit; Singlefile and Rockcliffe along with the neighbouring restaurant Pepper & Salt!

Bought by Viv and Phil Snowden  in 2007, Singlefile has gone on to win numerous awards. It was voted as Australia’s Top Cellar Doors in by Peter Forrestal in Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, April/May 2012. The cellar door is open every day 10-5pm where they serve a range of hot and cold food. You can taste wines at the tasting counter as well as having a glass or two at lunch. The owners Viv and Phil are often around at the cellar door talking to customers and telling them their story and how they started their journey in the world of wine.

The day after I visited Singlefile (named after the now 20 geese that walk in Singlefile on the property), I popped in for lunch at Pepper & Salt. Although arriving looking like a drowned rat our party was greeted warmly by owner Silas Masih. Opened in September 2010 by Silas and wife Ang, Pepper & Salt has gone on to receive positive reviews from just about everyone that visits including writers in at least five different magazines that line the entrance on a short book case.

Silas focuses on natural and locally grown produce and his dishes are delicious. His inspiration comes partly from his childhood working with spices at a young age and spice is a key element in his food. I enjoyed a tapas type meal when I went and the subtle spices blended in with the beautiful bread and beetroot hummus, well you’ll need to go yourselves to try it all out. We ordered the food and then went next door (literally to the other room) for a wine tasting led by cellar manager Craig. The wines at Rockcliffe (formally known as Matilda’s Estate) are readily available in the restaurant. There are four different brands; Rockcliffe, Forty Foot Drop, Third Reef and Quarram Rocks each offering great value at the different price points. More information about the wines can be found here.
