Ostler Tasting at Lamont’s

Just before Easter, I went to Lamont’s on Station Street for the Ostler tasting. It’s always a pleasure coming here for a tasting. There were five wines on tasting along with delicious canapés.

Wines at Ostler tastingOstler  is located in the Waitaki Valley on the South Island of New Zealand. On their website, they refer to themselves as ‘a boutique producer’ and produce ‘cool climate wines’ which include Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. I try not to think too much about awards about a winery until after I’ve tasted them so there is no risk of any pre-conceived ideas. But I couldn’t help but notice the number of awards they’ve won including The Top 20 New Zealand Pinot Noirs from Decanter in September last year not to mention Matt Kramer in Wine Spectator, Ray Jordan of The Weekend West. On tasting there was:

Ostler “Audrey’s” Pinot Gris 2013, $32.50 (RRP $40.75): So much going on this wine. Textured, floral aromas with refreshing acidity and depth.

Ostler Blue House Pinot Noir 2012, $28.50, (RRP $35.75): Berries, perfumed aromas, subtle hint of fruit on the palate with hint of cherries and red fruit. There’s a lovely length and freshness to it.

Ostler Blue House Pinot Noir 2013, $28.50, (RRP $35.75): Blueberry fruit follows through on the nose with upfront fruit on the palate and hints of plums and spice notes.

Ostler “Carolines” Pinot Noir 2008, $49.95 (RRP $64): Hint of stewed plums with a touch of age to it – subtle but noticeable. Freshness on the palate with some depth to it followed by cranberry with a lift to it.

Ostler “Carolines” Pinot Noir 2011, $49.95 (RRP $64): Truffle notes, deep red fruit and hints of black tea. There’s a freshness on the palate with soft tannins, refreshing acidity, notes of cranberries, black tea and red fruit. I would keep for another year before tasting it again as I feel it could open up further.

I was impressed by the intensity of fruit, depth and yet freshness to these wines. I look forward to trying them again soon.

Speaking of tastings at Lamont’s, I can’t wait for the the Sunday tapas next month when Moss Wood will make an appearance. In the meantime, look out for tastings at Lamont’s by liking them on Facebook and sign up to their newsletter in the store!
